After fumbling around the house looking for a movie to watch, I came across; Class Of 1999 (unrated). Was included in a DVD Horror Collection I purchased at Walmart some time ago; 8 Movie Pack (Lionsgate 2012). Out of what’s offered, I watched 4 films so far (C.H.U.D. II – Bud The Chud / Chopping Mall / Slaughter High, and Ghoulies III – Ghoulies Go To College). All fine “B” films, with the majority being slasher flicks.

I picked the sci-fi movie, Class Of 1999, because of its stars; Malcolm McDowell, Stacy Keach, and the lovely Pam Grier. Previously enjoyed the acting abilities of all three. Good enough reason to put it in the machine, and let it spin its tale.

Class Of 1999 was made in the year 1990, and was a sequel to the film; Class Of 1984. The story goes America has gone to shit, for we let our teenagers have a bit too much freedom, and now street gangs resemble 3rd world country military forces. Besides the violence, drugs (huffing) have also found their way into our society. Enter the idea of having; Free Fire Zones. A piece of land so ravaged with gang crime, that the cops simply won’t patrol there anymore. Various major cities had these, including one I call home, Houston. The movie takes place in Seattle, Washington.

Laws are laws. Just because the cops won’t help out, it doesn’t mean the younger tykes of the community aren’t obligated to still go to school. Picture the most extreme situation at a high school under all these circumstances, and there you have it. Problems get worse when extreme solutions start being applied in hopes of curbing the behavior problem.

What’s not to enjoy? The film itself had a realistic feel to it. The kids looked more 1980s than I would have imagined them looking closer to the 21st century. Was filmed in 1990. Reminds me of John Carpenter’s Escape From New York (1981). With a post-apocalyptic/punk-style cloud hovering over it.

Class of 1999 is in my opinion a slightly above-average popcorn flick. Out of ten stars, I’d give it; 8.
