I was turned on to Kraftwerk about 5 decades ago. Not your typical band. Turns out that today, they are thought of as pioneers in the field of electronic music. Fifty years ago, most people who regularly consumed rock music didn’t care for them much. Good thing that in certain circles, they were considered cool. Way ahead of their time. Something that any modern-day idiot writer from Rolling Stone magazine could say. Kraftwerk’s music influenced many, as it still does to this day. They are in the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame. Inducted just a few years back, in 2021.

Their song Autobaun from their fourth album, Kraftwerk – Autonaun (1974), which clocks in at 22:47 minutes long, is what made me a fan/follower for life. Mostly instrumental. A song that’s about driving on a highway, which has no speed limit. Wonderful to listen to with a good set of headphones.

I am not unaware of the stage show from 51 years ago. Today, it’s a mix of extraordinary lights and projections that thoroughly entertain the concertgoer while the music plays. Very little stage banter. Since Kraftwerk hails from Germany, prepare to hear some German. No fear, it’s not necessary to speak the language. One song after the other, performed brilliantly. Their music catalog is shorter than one might think, with 11 albums to their credit. Every song on every album is worth listening to. The lyrics and song themes are easy to understand. Much of this is earworm material. Songs like Trans Europe Express easily get stuck in your head.

Kraftwerk started with just two guys: Ralf Hütter and Florian Schneider (RIP 1947 – 2020). By the time Autobaun, the group’s fourth album, rolled around, the band had doubled in size. Quite a few musicians have come and gone since, but Ralf has stayed with Kraftwerk all this time.

Wow! I waited all this time to see Kraftwerk perform Autobaun. It was a shorter version, but they played enough of it that I was satisfied. Besides Autobaun, it was a great setlist—lots of songs the group is known for. The crowd was very enthusiastic, and the band was very well-received. The Wynn was a terrific place to see a concert, and I’d gladly go there again. This night on the Strip was an evening of Kraftwerk. Speaking on behalf of myself and what appeared to be a sold-out crowd, we loved every minute of it.
