How beautiful! Reading that, touched my heart. Funny since my last wife said I lacked one. Found on the bottom of the page when one opens the wonderfully illustrated booklet by Ed Unitsky that comes with Dave Kerzner’s second solo album; Static. Released this past autumn; digital and physical CD versions.

When the CD arrived via snail mail a few weeks ago, I honestly upon holding it in my hand, wondered who the hell, Dave KerZner was. I was soon to find out; keyboardist, vocalist, composer, multi-instrumentalist, lyricist, producer, and recording studio wizard. Maybe he can cook? Now that I am aware of Dave, and once this write-up is published because I LIKE what I hear here, I’ll for sure follow up by checking out the rest of Dave’s music catalog. This which would include music from a progressive rock band out there now called; Sound Of Contact.

Dave KerZner – Static (2017)

Promotion informs me that Dave KerZner – Static – is a progressive rock opera about the clutter and chaos in modern everyday life. Takes place in the modern world. The album weaves in and out of a variety of different subjects. Lyrics are printed out so one can follow along. If into old school art-rock/prog-rock …. every song on ‘Static” carries elements of everything you’d like about prog-rock, with a very 21st-century feel.

Core Members

Dave’s studio band consists of guitarists Fernando Perdomo and Randy McStine. Add bassist/backing vocalist Matt Dorsey and drummer Derek Cintron. All players are top-notch and worth researching/following. Music and words mostly by Dave Kerzner and assisted by several of those previously mentioned.

Lyrics

I admit, it’s kind of strange seeing how I’m a writer, that I don’t get into that side of song composition more. I’m on record saying vocals most times, are expendable. Love instrumentals or long instrumental passages between verses. It is what it is. Save your emails, I understand words/music together sometimes can be pure magic. Go ask Alice (Cooper). In professional music since the 1960s. A leader in hard rock/heavy metal, Alice is a master wordsmith. Combined with the right music, and now it’s a song worth adding to your music archives. I’m old school and into whole albums/CDs myself. Dave KerZner’s Static – its words are just as important as its music. This record carries adult themes. Not the fault of the music, for it’s just a vessel carrying random thoughts, poetry, or hopefully well-written stories. That said, I’d personally rather hear a song that mentions hypocrites and whores, than rainbows and unicorns.

Music

LOTS of impressive moments. Either separately or together as a team. Keyboard heavy as one would expect. One of my favorite songs on the album, Chain Reaction, our main guy is credited (this one time only) with besides the usual main and backing vocals/keyboard credit … acoustic guitar. Adds another layer. Very upbeat! This song and the same could be said of the others – capable of invading all available empty brain matter … and never leaving.

From the first to the last track … spot-on drum work! Reminiscent of Billy Sherwood’s playing some, when he’s into that (Yes … he is a drummer as well). Next, and it had to be, just as impressive bass playing. Perfect for any occasion guitar work. Keyboard sounds that can take one back, or push one further into existence. Just right vocals. Reminds me some of Kevin Moore: Chroma Key_OSI. Lyrics that can make you laugh, or cry (Trust). Produced well. So many cool things to mention. Having singers from Pink Floyd. How cool is that!

Hypocrites – Reckless (I LOVE this line: …”as long as your boyfriend don’t mind”) – Trust – Quiet Storm – Dirty Soap Box – Statistic – The Carnival Of Modern Life (Uncle G: “Masterpiece!” Well done closing number!).

Using a one to five rating system in which one star means it sucks through a very long straw (please properly recycle) to five stars which means it’s worth spending your hard money on, “Uncle G” rates Dave KerZner – Static … 5 stars! I’ve given this more repeat plays. And then I wondered what I’d say about it. Two words: “Buy it!” In today’s music market … leaps and bounds above the rest.
