Welcome!

Seeing how this is an archival website, I’d like to introduce to my newer 420 readers, a series of essays I did for a non-profit pro-cannabis website out of New York City, some years ago. One that I’ve gotten involved with, back in the year, 2011. The webmistress was the wonderful Arlene Williams aka Ganja Granny. I love her to death! The website, Green Ribbon World, sadly disappeared here recently. I was happy and grateful to be a part.

Versions 2.0 of Uncle G’s Corner… I aim to clean up any remaining typos and grammar errors. Content remains the same as it first appeared. When I’m finally done (this could take some time) archiving all the past essays published, I’ll start writing new ones. In a way, I already have done so: Uncle G’s FUN 420 Reviews.

Uncle G’s Corner (#19)
September 2012
Topic: Does Cannabis Lower Your IQ?

So here I am wondering quietly to myself, what the next topic would be for my Uncle G’s Corner. A month went by. At damn near the end of the second month, which would be August 2012 for those keeping score, I saw this headline while reading the morning news online; ‘Cannabis Smoking Permanently Lowers IQ.’

Immediately I sensed something was up. Carrying on with what I was doing, I then found yet another headline that was somewhat similar; ‘Pot Smoking May Leave Mark On Teen Brains.’ OK, now I know something’s up. It’s an organized attack.

This being the 19th edition of Uncle G’s Corner, I’ve had plenty of opportunities to express my opinion on the subject of cannabis. I don’t remember ever saying anything to the effect that cannabis would cause permanent damage to your brain. Step right up, folks. Inhale, and totally forget where your house keys are. That happens. Short Term Memory Loss commonly occurs when under the influence of the marijuana plant. Wears off in a couple/few hours.

Cheech & Chong

Let’s just say the comedy duo, Cheech & Chong, are millionaires. We would assume, right? No good for the image, but it’s probably true. They have been very successful. These guys admittedly have been smoking or consuming cannabis in one way, shape, or form for multiple decades now. In interviews, they say they have taken breaks away from the weed, but even subtracting a few years or even one decade from the scorecard, would still qualify them as major connoisseurs of ganja.

In order to have the success Cheech & Chong had, they must have worked hard…and they did. Started off, with no money. Worked on an act. Toured all over the place. Numerous funny, laugh-your-ass-off routines. Comedy records! And all that followed.

I personally saw Tommy perform live three times, between the years 2005, and 2010. Once on his own, and twice with Cheech, on two different tours. The dude was at the top of his game each and every time. I did not experience any situation watching Mr. Chong perform where I thought to myself; “Tommy appears to have less intelligence this time around than he did the last time I saw him.”

21 Aug 2005 – Houston Improv

According to these news stories, frequent pot users’ IQ is lowered over a certain time span. One news story stated an average of eight points lower than if that same person would have not used cannabis at all. Then the writer went on to state how important one’s IQ was. It was a scary piece. Research-based on a group of people over a certain time span. One conclusion was if one refrained for a year, the damage would reverse itself. Really? Chronic users are screwed, or are they? Can using weed in moderation, make losing eight IQ points, only go down two? Is any of this shit even believable?

Let’s go back to Tommy. He has a new podcast that he calls…get this…a pot cast (LOL). He wants to take on the radio personality, Rush Limbaugh. That will take work. In all sincerity, good luck, to him. And then Chong announced to the world that he had prostate cancer. Something he’s treating non-traditionally, focusing on cannabis. The man sounded healthy to me. Mentally sound! Not one time did he come across as a gibbering idiot from all those years of using pot. Case closed. Back to the lower IQ thing. Their conclusions are not conclusive. Words like ‘may’ and ‘could’ helped to define their opposition to legalization/decriminalization. It’s all bullshit.

One last Cheech & Chong example; memory. I saw them last perform live only a few years ago, back in 2010. A whole evening of sketches, telling stories and answering questions from the audience. The comedy legends acted out some of their most famous sketches. I’ll end this latest Uncle G’s Corner by asking one question. If cannabis use decreases one’s IQ, how were Cheech & Chong still capable, decades after making their debut, of remembering and acting out all those routines perfectly each and every night and not being affected negatively? Seemingly while also defying aging…carrying on like young men in the process? You tell me.

In Solidarity,
Uncle G
